Context shifts: why home success can drop outdoors

A behavior that works in the kitchen is not automatically fluent on a busy path. New places change smells, movement, distance, footing, and competing rewards. That does not mean the dog has forgotten; it means the context has changed the task.

Treat context as useful evidence

Instead of labeling a behavior reliable or unreliable everywhere, notice where it succeeds and where it needs support. Place and distraction level are often enough to reveal a meaningful pattern without documenting every possible detail.

A sparse record of real sessions is more useful than pre-building dozens of hypothetical scenarios.

Change one meaningful condition

Move from a familiar room to the garden, or from a quiet path to a place with mild activity. Keep distance, duration, and reinforcement easier while the environment becomes harder.

  • Begin far enough from distractions to preserve a clear response.
  • Use a leash or long line whenever the task requires safe control.
  • Return to an easier condition after repeated misses.

Build reliability where daily life happens

Once a context becomes stable, practice can spread gradually to nearby conditions. The goal is not to test everywhere at once. It is to add enough varied, successful evidence that the behavior holds up in the situations that matter.
